2Awesome Studio stacks five funding sources, resets scope for Altered Alma sequel
Barcelona-based 2Awesome Studio is finalizing Altered Alma, its largest project to date. The Kickstarter campaign raised over €260,000 from 5,100+ backers against a €40,000 goal. Co-founder Alexander Santiago said the studio has stacked five funding sources since 2014. 2Awesome plans to scale back scope for a potential Altered Alma sequel.
Stacking non-dilutive funding across three Kickstarter campaignsSantiago said 2Awesome's funding model combines Kickstarter, government funding, loans and publisher support since 2014.
"It's all been Kickstarter, government funding, loans, [and support from] publishers" - Alexander Santiago, Co-founder, 2Awesome Studio
Dimension Dive raised €36,996 from over 1,000 backers in 2017.
AK-xolotl raised €132,807 from a €15,000 goal and 2,500+ backers in 2022.
Altered Alma raised €260,000+ from 5,100+ backers in 2024, far above its €40,000 goal.
Outsourcing work funds operations without becoming core business
The studio treats outsourcing and co-development as a secondary revenue stream, not its core business.
"It's not our core business, but we need to keep the lights on, so we provide services for others" - Alexander Santiago, Co-founder, 2Awesome Studio
The practice began with in-house ports on 2Awesome's first title to build technical know-how.
Word-of-mouth after porting Othercide to Switch for Focus Home Interactive built its outsourcing reputation.
Santiago said outsourcing and co-development remain challenging markets to enter.
Scope reset follows industrywide shift toward smaller budgets
Development on Altered Alma began in 2023, during an era of big-budget projects.
Santiago called it 2Awesome's biggest game, team and scope to date.
"Looking at the overall industry for newer IPs and projects, it's focused on smaller budgets and focused games - doing one or two things really well" - Alexander Santiago, Co-founder, 2Awesome Studio
The planned sequel will narrow scope to fit that smaller-budget trend.
No universal funding formula despite a diversified strategy
Santiago said the studio has no fixed formula for sustaining indie development. What this means
"I wish I had the formula" - Alexander Santiago, Co-founder, 2Awesome Studio
2Awesome is planning two to three years ahead, including a possible Altered Alma sequel.
Santiago said the studio aims to fit both smaller and bigger projects.
For Investors & VC: Add backer growth across successive crowdfunding campaigns to indie diligence as a repeat-demand signal.
For UA & Marketing: Shift indie pre-launch spend toward curated showcase slots ahead of paid acquisition.
For Service Vendors: Expect lower console porting bids from indie studios that sell ports to cover overhead.
