Activision QA union authorizes strike after two years of stalled contract talks

Nearly 600 Activision QA testers voted to authorize a strike under AQAU-CWA. The vote follows two years of stalled first-contract talks with CWA. Timing lands days before Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's October 16 early access. Microsoft's 2022 labor neutrality pact with CWA expired last fall, workers say.

Contract impasse triggers strike authorization vote
AQAU-CWA formed in March 2024 with over 600 QA testers.
Bargaining opened in August 2024 and has stalled for two years.
Workers cite unresolved wages, AI guardrails, contractor use and ADA accommodations.
"The results of the strike authorization vote send a clear message to Activision management: it is time to stop playing games." - Susie McAllister, CWA District 7 Vice President

Microsoft's labor neutrality agreement faces its first major test
Microsoft voluntarily recognized AQAU-CWA under a 2022 neutrality agreement with CWA.
That neutrality pact expired last fall, according to the union.
CWA now represents nearly 2,500 workers across Activision Blizzard, beyond QA alone.
"Since the agreement expired, the company has been significantly bolder in their attempts to push the bounds of status quo, while further slowing the rate of negotiations at the table." - Jenna Huffman, QA Functional Tester, AQAU-CWA Bargaining Committee

QA headcount shrinks as live-service launch risk grows
QA headcount fell from nearly 600 to just over 400 since 2024.
Microsoft has run five rounds of Xbox layoffs in three years.
Modern Warfare 4 launches into early access October 16, worldwide October 23.
Activision says contingency plans will prevent disruption to players or releases.

What to watch
Activision and CWA have scheduled talks for October 21 and 22.
Modern Warfare 4's global launch follows on October 23.
CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. now holds authority to call a strike at any time.
What this means

For Investors & VC: Add union bargaining status and neutrality-pact expiry dates to AAA studio diligence.
For Publishers & Developers: Lock in first-contract terms with unionized QA units before committing to fixed launch dates.
