ArtStation makes NoAI default, but leaves recruiters no AI-content filter
Summary
ArtStation enabled NoAI protection by default for all new and existing uploads on September 2, 2026.
Artists must now opt out to allow AI training, reversing the platform's prior opt-in model.
Search engines still index ArtStation, keeping portfolios discoverable by studios and recruiters.
No equivalent safeguard exists to filter AI-generated submissions from discovery.
KitBash, which bought ArtStation and Sketchfab from Epic, now sets the platform's AI policy.
01
NoAI now applies by default to new and past work
The NoAI tag is default-on for all new uploads and retroactively applied to existing profiles.
Artists must actively opt out to make work available for AI training.
ArtStation is using Cloudflare bot-management tools to block AI crawlers before they scrape content.
Normal search engine indexing continues, so recruiters can still find portfolios via standard search.
02
Portfolio verification gap stays open for hiring teams
ArtStation admits its #CreatedWithAI label and filtering tools are "not enough" to solve discovery.
"Great artists become harder to find. Portfolios become harder to evaluate. The work people come here to see gets buried."
The NoAI default protects against training, but does nothing to flag AI-generated submissions.
Studios sourcing concept, illustration, or 3D talent must build their own portfolio vetting steps.
What this means
For Publishers & Developers: ArtStation will not verify portfolios for you - add manual AI-detection to hiring pipelines.
For Service Vendors: Portfolio verification and AI-provenance tooling now have a clear buyer in studio recruitment teams.
