NBA 2K27 extends its run over Madden

NBA 2K27 topped the August chart for a third straight year, after 2024 and 2025.
This continues a reversal of EA's Madden NFL series, which previously held a long winning streak.
Madden NFL 27 ranked second and fourth, the fourth spot driven by its Kickoff Bundle version.
NBA 2K27 also rose to third on the 2026 year-to-date chart, overtaking Crimson Desert.

New releases fill out the August top 10

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls debuted at third place.
Star Wars Zero Company entered at fifth place.
Big Walk opened at eighth place.
Half of August's top 10 were new titles, alongside catalog sellers Mario Kart World and the Switch 2 port of Elden Ring.

Content spending contracts despite the new release wave

Total US content spending fell 10% year-over-year to $3.8 billion in August.
Year-to-date content spending is down 2% to $32.2 billion.
Console spending fell 7% year-over-year, while mobile spending dropped 18% year-over-year.
PC spending grew 13% year-over-year, the only platform segment to rise.

What this means

For Publishers & Developers: Ship day-one PC builds alongside console versions on next-cycle launches.
For Investors & VC: Cut installed-base growth assumptions when valuing console-exclusive studios.
For Service Vendors: Pitch Switch 2 porting and Game-Key Card production to publishers holding aging catalog hits.
