Epic Games veteran Ben Board takes CEO seat at CodeDev's optimization studio
Summary
Ben Board, nine-year Epic Games veteran who ran Unreal Engine's UK and European business during Fortnite's peak, becomes CEO of The Performance Guys
The division is CodeDev Group's cross-engine optimization arm, launched June 2026 - Board's hire follows within weeks
"I haven't seen a pure specialist that bets its house on solving that problem alone - so The Performance Guys have a very clear and powerful offering."
01
Pure-play optimization is the unclaimed white space
Board's thesis: poor performance is endemic across AAA, but deep optimization talent is scarce even inside large studios
He frames optimization as a revenue lever, not a finishing polish - directly tied to review scores and sales
"Faster frames make better games, and help scores and sales."
Neither Board nor CodeDev names a competing pure-play optimization specialist - the category is positioned as uncontested
02
A platform-side operator hired to sell into risk-averse AAA
Board's 30-year path: Bullfrog and Lionhead gameplay scripting, BossAlien product, Xbox 360 devrel, then nine years at Epic
That mix of engine depth plus platform BD is the profile needed to close optimization co-dev deals with cautious AAA publishers
"Bringing Ben in as CEO of The Performance Guys sends an unmistakable message to the market: if your game has a performance problem on any engine, we have the best team on the planet to fix it."
03
Three divisions, 60+ specialists, tiered co-dev offering
The Performance Guys (cross-engine optimization) sits beside The Unreal Guys (Unreal co-dev) and Full Spectrum Interactive (full-dev for small-to-AA)
Cross-engine design makes the optimization arm relevant regardless of a client's tech stack
Group headcount exceeds 60 senior specialists - institutional scale, not boutique capacity
What this means
For Publishers & Developers: a named, CEO-led vendor now exists for engine-agnostic performance rescue - shortlist before greenlight, not after review embargo
For Investors & VC: specialist technical co-dev is consolidating leadership talent from first-party engine teams - a signal that the segment is maturing beyond staff-aug
