- Excluding studios absorbed into parents or on support work lowers the 60.8% figure to 51.6%.
- Independent studios closed at just 2% over the same period, versus 12.6% for acquired peers.
- Cardoso notes the independent figure rests on a single closure.
Arkane Lyon tests the stewardship model live
- Arkane Lyon needs a buyer by mid-December or risks closure, sources tell Bloomberg.
- Ubisoft and at least two other companies have made acquisition offers.
- Microsoft's move follows layoffs affecting 3,200 employees and several studio closures.
- STJV, the French developers' union, says Arkane remains profitable but not profitable enough for Microsoft.
What this means
- For Investors & VC: Add the buyer's historical studio-retention record to exit diligence before accepting strategic offers.
- For Publishers & Developers: Negotiate leadership-retention and buyback-option clauses into any acquisition term sheet.
- For Service Vendors: Pitch transition-support and co-dev contracts to studios being divested or bought back by management.
