Ilkka Paananen (Supercell) earns BAFTA Fellowship - the legacy behind the honour

Summary
Supercell CEO and co-founder Ilkka Paananen will receive the BAFTA Fellowship at the 2026 BAFTA Game Awards on April 17 in London.
The Fellowship is BAFTA's highest honour, previously given to Miyamoto, Kojima, Newell, and Rockstar Games.
Paananen's 25-year legacy spans Sumea, Digital Chocolate, and Supercell - 5 billion-dollar franchises, 300M monthly active players, record 2024 revenue.
Unlike competitors covering just the announcement, this recognition reflects a deeper business legacy rooted in culture, restraint, and creative autonomy.
"My greatest fortune has been the privilege of working with amazingly talented and passionate game developers over the past 25 years. They are the ones who create the magic."
— Ilkka Paananen, CEO, Supercell

Why Paananen earned gaming's most prestigious individual honour

The BAFTA Fellowship - first given to Alfred Hitchcock in 1971 - entered the games industry in 2007 with Will Wright.
Paananen joins Miyamoto, Kojima, Newell, Carmack, Molyneux, and Rockstar Games as recipients.
BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip cited his "championing of creative collaboration and trust at every level" as central to the recognition.
"A visionary leader in games, he has built a globally influential company while championing creative collaboration and trust at every level."

From a café conversation to a $8.4B mobile empire

Paananen became a CEO at age 21 after a chance meeting at a café with engineers looking for a business co-founder.
He co-founded Sumea in 2000 - years before the App Store existed - which was later acquired by Digital Chocolate (Trip Hawkins' EA-backed publisher).
In 2011 he co-founded Supercell, valued at €8.4B when acquired by Tencent in 2016.
Supercell's portfolio - Hay Day, Clash of Clans, Boom Beach, Clash Royale, Brawl Stars - each crossed $1B in lifetime revenue.
The company now serves 300M+ monthly active players and recorded its highest-ever revenue in 2024.

The "cells" philosophy - the culture that built the company

Supercell's model empowers small, independent creative teams (called "cells") rather than top-down management.
Paananen credits restrained monetisation as a key reason players return to Clash of Clans and Hay Day for over a decade.
"It can be so tempting to over-monetise and burn out players - but I think that absolutely can destroy games and companies."
— Ilkka Paananen
The model is now being tested: no new blockbuster since Brawl Stars (2018), and Squad Busters was shut down in 2024 - Supercell's first live game cancellation.
In 2025, Supercell hired 300 new staff and split into two divisions - new games and live games - with president Sara Bach joining as a key leader.

Beyond Supercell - investor, mentor, philanthropist

Through Illusian, Paananen backs European tech and gaming startups, positioning himself as a key voice for the region's entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The Ilkka Paananen Foundation (est. 2015) focuses on social and mental well-being for children, young people, and families.
Initiatives include social impact measurement tools and educational games - aligning commercial success with societal contribution.

What's next - AI, innovation, and the Nintendo dream

Paananen is more bullish than ever on mobile: better hardware, improved networks, and AI giving small creative teams "superpowers."
"This idea that Supercell was built on small, creative independent cells - AI will give them superpowers like they never had before."
— Ilkka Paananen
He is openly chasing a "Pokémon Go moment" - a genre-defining experience no one has seen before - as the industry's next leap.
His long-term ambition: build a company like Nintendo, now 136 years old, known for enduring games and iconic characters.
As long as Supercell moves closer to that goal, Paananen says he plans to stay.
