Jagex scales RuneScape to four concurrent MMOs as Unreal Engine project adds live-ops complexity

Summary
Jagex revealed a fourth RuneScape MMO, tentatively titled RuneScape 4, at RuneFest 2026 in Birmingham.
The game runs on Unreal Engine, set in Dragonwilds' Sixth Age in Ashenfall.
RS4 joins three live titles: RuneScape, soon relaunching as Reignited, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds.
Jagex says RS4 will not replace existing titles and gets its own dedicated team.
01

Four live roadmaps run in parallel

Reignited launches December 2 with a fresh economy and permanent removal of Treasure Hunter.
Old School RuneScape ships the Fractured Archive raid October 20 and Hardcore Worlds November 4.
Dragonwilds adds the Luminance update in December ahead of 2027's Blood Crystal Saga.
"This is something that the entire studio will work on, all of us together."
— Jesse America, Dragonwilds Executive Producer

RS4 grew out of a Dragonwilds expansion

RS4 began as Shadows of Ashenfall, a planned Dragonwilds expansion adding persistent servers and trading.
Early prototypes showed the design "pointed at a completely different scope," Jesse America said.
Jagex gave the project its own dedicated team instead of folding it into Dragonwilds.
Jagex has no confirmed platforms, accounts, combat or skills systems for RS4 yet.

Reignited backlash raises cannibalization risk for RS4

Reignited requires players to restart characters, drawing backlash from users with decades of progress.
Jagex announced RS4 about 30 minutes after the Reignited reveal drew backlash.
Polygon's analysis suggested RuneScape 3 could shed most of its player base to RS4.

What this means

For Investors & VC: Add cross-title player-migration modeling to diligence on single-IP multi-MMO franchise holders.
For Service Vendors: Pitch persistent-server, netcode and economy-tooling engineering to the newly staffed dedicated team.
For Publishers & Developers: Separate successor reveals from disruptive legacy-title resets to keep veteran players from migrating early.
