Krafton AI ships on-device SLM companion in PUBG Ally beta
Summary
Krafton opened a two-week global beta (June 17 - July 1) for Ally Duo, a PUBG arcade mode pairing players with AI companion Ella
Ella runs on an on-device small language model built on Nvidia Ace, processing voice and game state in real time
Originally announced October 2025, the 8-month delay exposes the engineering cost of conversational AI in competitive multiplayer
"Ally Duo is an early step toward exploring how AI companions can create new ways to play"
01
On-device SLM, not a scripted NPC
PUBG Ally is a Co-Playable Character that parses voice commands and live game context to generate actions
STT and TTS pipelines handle real-time voice in Korean, Chinese, and English during the beta
On-device inference via Nvidia Ace replaces cloud calls to hit split-second latency on movement and item pickup
Strategy and positioning route through a separate path that fuses conversational flow with game state
02
Three failure modes Krafton had to solve
Conversational latency had to stay near-instant during active combat exchanges
Game state had to stay synchronized with the AI's contextual awareness frame-by-frame
The model had to be prevented from entering infinite decision loops under erratic battle conditions
The 8-month slip from October 2025 announcement to June 2026 beta quantifies the difficulty
03
Beta is live fine-tuning, not a QA gate
Sanhok map and two-player squads were chosen as a controlled scope before broader deployment
Player feedback during the two weeks will drive model refinement, not just bug triage
Ally Duo sits inside the Raon family of four multimodal AI models Krafton unveiled in April
Krafton plans to fine-tune Raon per game title - a modular per-IP AI layer, not one horizontal platform
"We believe PUBG Ally can open up new opportunities for creators by enabling different types of gameplay, interactions and storytelling moments"
