Osprey Games lays off its board and card game team as Bloomsbury seeks buyer

Bloomsbury confirmed all staff exclusively working on Osprey's board and card games have left. The exits came as redundancies at the end of September 2026. Bloomsbury had sought a buyer for the segment since May, hoping to include the team. Now Bloomsbury seeks a buyer for the catalogue alone, including Undaunted and Imperium.

Designer contracts limit who can buy the catalogue
Some Osprey designer contracts restrict transferring publishing rights to third parties.
Several agreements appear to limit transfers to buyers acquiring all or substantially all titles.
That structure could complicate any sale targeting a single franchise like Undaunted or Imperium.
Bloomsbury called the contractual arrangements confidential and declined to detail specific terms or outcomes.

Severance cuts strip the catalogue of its creative team
The entire board and card game team left via redundancies at the end of September.
Bloomsbury would not confirm how many staff were affected by the cuts.
A May buyer search had hoped to include the existing team alongside the catalogue.
Losing that team leaves any buyer without the original designers behind Undaunted and Imperium.

Unreleased titles and existing stock remain unresolved
Osprey has multiple unreleased board and card games under contract at various stages.
Bloomsbury has not said whether those projects publish under Osprey or transfer to a buyer.
Undaunted 2200: Revolution and Upland & Prairie still ship as planned this month.
No reprints of existing titles are currently planned, Bloomsbury said.
What this means
For Investors & VC: Add rights-assignment and change-of-control clauses in designer contracts to every tabletop catalogue diligence checklist.
For Publishers & Developers: Pitch co-publishing deals to Osprey designers whose contracted projects now lack a development home.
For Service Vendors: Offer outsourced development and reprint-manufacturing capacity to bidders, who would inherit no in-house production team.
