AppLovin's ad formats linked to highest player churn across mobile games
Summary
A GameBiz Consulting study using Unity's AdQuality tool reveals that ad network choice and format directly drive player churn in mobile games.
AppLovin dominates CTR and revenue metrics but consistently records the highest churn rates across platforms, formats, and game genres.
Interstitial ads cause dramatically higher churn than rewarded video across all networks, with iOS users showing greater sensitivity.
Chartboost and Google AdMob deliver the lowest churn rates, despite the lowest CTRs, suggesting a trade-off between short-term engagement and retention.
"Every ad shown inside a game is effectively an extension of the game itself."
01
Study scope - multi-game, multi-platform ad quality analysis
Data collected via Unity's AdQuality tool across multiple casual and midcore titles in November 2025.
Platforms covered: Android and iOS.
Ad formats analysed: rewarded video and interstitial ads.
Key metrics tracked: churn rate (D1, D3, D7, D14), CTR, ad escape rate, ad duration, and auto-clicks.
Data was broken down by ad network to isolate network-specific UX and behavioural impact.
02
Interstitial ads drive far higher churn than rewarded video
Interstitial ads triggered significantly higher churn across all networks and both platforms.
On Android, AppLovin interstitials reached a D1 churn rate approaching 10%, with D3 churn near 7%.
On iOS, AppLovin interstitials hit over 22% D1 churn in some games, the highest single instance in the dataset.
Rewarded video performed far better - most Android networks stayed below 2% D1 churn, and iOS below 1%.
"Interstitials are a more intrusive format that some users find intolerable."
03
Platform disparity - iOS users are more churn-sensitive
iOS users showed higher peak churn percentages from interstitial ads than Android users (15%+ vs. ~10%).
iOS rewarded video, however, performed better than Android rewarded video in churn retention.
CTRs were broadly higher on iOS across all ad networks, pointing to stronger forced or accidental click behaviour.
Most ad networks on iOS served interstitials longer than 20 seconds, exceeding Android's typical 15-second threshold.
04
AppLovin leads in CTR and revenue metrics but dominates worst churn outcomes
AppLovin recorded the highest CTR in 13 out of 14 analysed cases, often exceeding 80-91%.
AppLovin had the longest average ad duration in 11 out of 14 cases, frequently surpassing 60 seconds.
AppLovin recorded the worst churn performance in over 50% of all cases across all games, formats, and platforms.
High CTR was paired with elevated post-ad churn, suggesting much of the click activity was accidental rather than intentional.
Moloco, Mintegral, and ironSource also showed elevated churn in multiple categories, particularly for interstitials.
"What looked like engagement was often accidental - and what looked like monetisation quietly translated into player loss."
05
Chartboost and AdMob lead on retention despite low engagement scores
Chartboost and Google AdMob consistently recorded the lowest churn rates across almost all categories and platforms.
Both networks also posted the lowest CTRs, often below 10%, contrasting sharply with AppLovin's 80-91%.
The data suggests a direct correlation between high CTR pressure and downstream player churn.
Google AdMob's high auto-click flags were identified as measurement artefacts from their end card overlays, not actual user behaviour.
06
Ad quality is a strategic retention risk, not just a revenue footnote
Players attribute poor ad experiences - freezes, forced redirects, unskippable formats - directly to the game developer, not the ad network.
Game genre and user base affect churn tolerance: hyper-casual games recorded the highest ad-driven churn, midcore games the lowest.
"Players don't see CTRs or eCPMs - they feel interruptions, frustration, confusion, and loss of control."
Studios cannot afford to fully remove high-performing networks like AppLovin - complete opt-out is commercially unviable.
The recommended approach is precision management: blocking harmful creatives, segmenting traffic to protect high-value users, and enforcing stricter ad templates.
07
Path forward - experience-aware monetisation as the new standard
Unity's AdQuality tool is positioned as a practical starting point for ad-level churn monitoring.
Internal tracking solutions are recommended as more reliable and customisable alternatives for long-term use.
Studios are encouraged to monitor metrics at the individual creative and advertiser level, not just network level.
The next step for the industry is shifting optimisation logic from impression volume and eCPM toward retention-weighted ad value.
