Sports Interactive cancels Football Manager 25 after failing to meet quality bar
Summary
Sports Interactive and Sega have scrapped FM25 weeks before its March 2025 launch
The title had already been delayed twice before outright cancellation
Core failure: overarching player experience and UI fell short of required standards
Pre-orders will be fully refunded; all focus shifts to the next franchise entry
"Putting out the current FM25 would have been the wrong decision"
01
Why FM25 was cancelled
Billed as a major series overhaul, FM25 faced compounding development challenges
Two prior delays failed to close the quality gap
At year-end milestones, it became clear targets would not be met even with extended timelines
"Whilst many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be"
02
The release vs. cancel calculus
Studio acknowledged it could have shipped and patched later
Chose not to, citing player experience standards
A further delay would have pushed launch too deep into the football season
That timing risk would have disrupted the cadence of all future releases
"We have clear validation for the new direction of the game and are getting close — however, we're too far away from the standards you deserve"
03
Regulatory delay on communications
The cancellation decision was made internally after "extensive" evaluation
Public announcement was held back due to legal and financial compliance obligations
"Due to stakeholder compliance, including legal and financial regulations, today was the earliest date that we could issue this statement"
04
What's next
All development resources are now redirected to the next Football Manager entry
Studio has signaled the new direction has strong consumer playtesting validation
No release window or title details confirmed yet
Updates promised as soon as progress allows
