FREQUENTLY ASKED

How this publishers and developers ranking is built.

How is this list of video game publishers and developers ranked?

By the number of distinct games a corporate group is credited on as publisher or developer since 2015. Platform releases, editions and re-releases of the same game collapse into one title, so a group that shipped one game on six platforms counts once — not six times. Credits are rolled up to the parent group, so Capcom Japan and Capcom USA are one company, not two.

Is this a ranking of the biggest game publishers by revenue?

No. Revenue rankings of the largest video game companies are published elsewhere and tell you how much money a group makes. This ranks output — how many distinct titles it actually shipped — because output is what tells a vendor, a studio or an investor how much production work a group commissions and how consistently it ships.

What is the difference between the publishers and the game developer companies here?

Most groups in the Top 100 do both, which is why they are ranked in one list. Each profile separates the two: what the group develops in-house through its own studios, and what it publishes or commissions from external developers and service vendors — with the partners credited on those titles.

Can I use this to find a publisher for my game?

It is built for exactly that research step. Before you pitch, open a profile and check what genres and platforms the group actually ships, whether it publishes third-party titles at all, and which external studios it has already worked with. That tells you whether you fit its slate — and who inside its network already vouches for work like yours.

Why are outsourcing and service companies not in this list?

Service work is a different side of the market. Companies whose dominant credits are art, audio, QA, porting or localization are classified as vendors and ranked in the outsourcing directory instead. This list covers the buyers — the publishing and development groups that own the titles and the budgets.

How current is the data behind this game publishers list?

The ranking is rebuilt from the production-credit graph as new shipped titles and credits are ingested, and covers releases from 2015 onward. Corporate events that move faster than credits — acquisitions, funding, studio openings and closures — arrive through the Insights Feed, where you can follow any group on your list.
