Wizards of the Coast opens Montreal D&D studio, backed by Quebec tax credits

Hasbro opened Wizards of the Coast Studios Inc. in downtown Montreal on October 8, 2026. The 35,518-square-foot site targets 200 employees by 2028 for D&D games. Quebec's tax credit covers up to 37.5% of eligible labour costs. That undercuts Hasbro's cost base in Renton, Washington, amid earlier Wizards layoffs.

Studio timeline slipped and shares Invoke's address
The studio occupies office space adjoining Invoke Studios at 1001 Boulevard Robert-Bourassa.
Wizards of the Coast acquired Tuque Games in 2019, rebranding it Invoke Studios in 2022.
Montreal International first detailed the project in September 2025, promising a summer 2026 opening.
Hasbro has not clarified how the new studio relates to Invoke.

Quebec incentives offset Hasbro's US cost cuts
Quebec's incentives also include recruitment support from Montreal International and Investissement Quebec International.
That subsidy gives Hasbro a cheaper employment base than its Renton, Washington headquarters.
Hasbro cut over 1,100 jobs across Wizards of the Coast in 2023-2024.
The expansion moves state-supported roles to Canada instead of restoring the cut US jobs.

Hasbro bets on an in-house digital hit
Hasbro wants an internal digital pipeline instead of relying on external licensing deals.
Larian Studios earned hundreds of millions from Baldur's Gate 3 before leaving the brand.
Hasbro's virtual tabletop project, Project Sigil, was already abandoned before this studio opened.
"This studio will grow to be the largest concentration of video game talent at Hasbro." - Dan Ayoub, SVP and Head of D&D, Hasbro
What this means
For Publishers & Developers: Drop pitches seeking this franchise license; the IP owner is shifting new titles in-house.
For Investors & VC: Underwrite steeper senior-wage inflation when valuing studios in the same city as this hiring ramp.
For Service Vendors: Pitch art, QA and engine co-dev to the new studio while its headcount remains far below target.
